Dan Hofstader

I am new in Boston. I studied painting at Columbia University with Walter Murch and art history with Meyer Schapiro. I began to show my work in Stockholm with Eero Solin, who has since moved his gallery to Helsinki. I have also taught in the graduate painting department at U. Penn and at Bennington College, VT, where I also showed.

My current work stems from an interest in color volume. By this I understand the total impact of a color area, including its size, hue, saturation, etc. I believe I have been influenced by teaching collage to Swedish elementary-school students and also by a lot of Japanese art and design. My shapes tend to occur by chance, and the colors are arrived at spontaneously. I believe that color can elicit feeling in the viewer, analogously to song.
